Never fly fished before in my life. I have a Rod/Reel combo with line and a leader. And I know I will need waders, a vest, and a net. After that, I'm lost. What other essentials should I have to start out?
I am big on starting simple especially with fly fishing but I listed some must-haves and some optional items below. My additions to GMB's list are as follows:
- You are going to need a flybox
- You will also need a hemostat or pliers to get the hooks out
- You may want to have some dry fly dressing if you are going to be using flies on the surface
- You could bring split shot for getting flies down deep
- Polarized sunglasses will help you to see fish
*Optional items would be strike indicators for nymphing, sinktips for streamers and other subsurface flies but really you wont need these right at the start unless you are doing something specific ie fishing wet flies for steelhead / salmon.

The last time I tried to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in a homemade airplane I was stranded on an island, for 6 months. It was terrible. I had no food, and I really don’t enjoy fish, so it was rather unpleasant.
I didn’t have a change of clothes so I had to keep wearing the same vest and trousers, which got rather revolting.
I did try and make some new clothes, but a shirt and tie made of coconut tree leaves is really not all that fashionable, nor is it comfortable. I tried to make some shoes out of sand, but I think that was because I hadn’t eaten in 5 days and was living off coconut milk.
I went swimming quite a bit, but that was only because I couldn’t stop running back and forth on the beach shouting “I need to feed my dolphin! It’s going to starve to death!! GUPPY! GUPPY!! GAAAAWWWWW!” I believe that happened also because I fell asleep on the beach and became very dehydrated and hungry, and I had a dream I bought a dolphin from the supermarket… odd, I know.
About the second month on the island, I started to really lose contact with the rest of the world, more than likely because I was isolated from it… but also because those damn fish wouldn’t stop taunting me about how I always wear the same outfit. “I’m sorry, I didn’t pack more; I wasn’t planning on staying here for more than a day!” And yet, day after day, I had to listen to them taunting me relentlessly, over and over…
I’d often sit up on the beach in the fetal position rocking back and forth trying to convince myself it was only my imagination, and that fish really didn’t have a fashion sensibility and weren’t able to decipher whether or not my outfit was the same, or if I just had a lot of similar ones.
The song DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY eventually became the only thing that left my lips when I spoke out loud, but other than that, I just did a lot of thinking…(or at least I thought it was only thinking, and that I wasn’t actually saying it aloud.)
At around month 3 I began to reenact scenes from Sesame Street. Most of the time, I had a coconut tree play all the characters except Elmo, which I most often played. Sometimes I heard the fish mocking me, which I tried to not let bother me, but sometimes it was hard to do.
In the mornings I often liked to take a stroll around the island, looking for other sesame street characters, and sometimes I’d find someone new. One morning, I found the cookie monster in a cave. Well, actually, it was a rock, but he told me he wouldn’t mind playing the cookie monster, and that he would also like a cookie. I told him so would I, and then took him back to my side of the island. Later that afternoon, we ended up reenacting over 10 different episodes of Sesame Street.
yeh.
don't ask.
just tell me what you think.
nd don't be mean either. i don't need to hear you tell me it don't make sense or what's the point.
I'm not reading this, so whatever the question is, flip a coin for the answer.

So for my Halloween costume, I'm being a fishermen. I have a black vest with a couple flies on it, a Tillie Hat with one in it and a fishing rod.
I have no gum boots, and I was going to take my brothers shirt and just I guess wear my baggy jeans, but I was going to make a moustache out of eye liner? Would it work?
sure! but practice first.

I personally feel that if they have recycled that DNA test idea to death. I am sick of the "guess if Im a man" shows. I do like the ones about the out of control teens, however they need to get Dee West off of there. He comes out with a vest on and no shirt, looking like a muscular Finding Nemo fish. He comes in yelling and you could see spit flying. He yells at the teens and abusive husbands. I do not feel that all of those people changed their ways within an hour and because of him. I also dont like that fact that people are able to CUT school and go to his show as an audience member. My brother has done this many times!. If they were there to help the woman getting a DNA test then why not save them the embarrasment and tell them before they start the yelling and cursing a guy out.
Maury promised not to exploit people, but when his ratings dropped, he did just that. I dont like when he has the deformed children up there, even though he gives them things, but why do you need to exploit a child because of their disability, or looks.
I especially HATE those opposite shows where there is a skinny guy and a HUUUUUUUUUGE girl, and she is damn near naked. No one wants to see your dimples and craters..
This here people is a certified rant. LOL
my brother is an adult now. he was about 16-17 when he cut school to see maury..only because his girlfriend wanted to go.
LOL@Dee west looking like finding nemo. You are so right about all of this. Maury is not helping anyone. You see even HE is on the news now for sexual harrassment. I used to watch his show faithfully, but all it consists of is UPDATES of old crap, and the new episodes are the SAME topics with NEW faces. The hidden camera shows are snoozers, how many times can we see a car run into a pole? Or seeing people having sex in the office. Then he brings the kids with birht defects and lets them sing and dance, but he really doesnt care about those children, it is all about RATINGS!. He did promise not to exploit people, until his ratings became super low. He wasnt that bad on channel 4, but when he came to channel 11, thats when it got bad. Jerry springer is another show that totally bites. I saw a question on Ask! Yahoo. A person asked were the characters on Jerry Springer Real and they answered Yes. Total bull. Even on Ricki Lake(canceled) a young teen girl received an HIV test and it was negative, however what if it had been positive? I think she probably still would have told.
On Jenny Jones, a man had a gay crush on his friend and was killed 3 days later because he embarrased the guy(he kissed him when he had on a blindfold)
I just hate talk shows. I'd rather watch court shows now, and even they are getting terrible(Judge Mathis, does just that, JUDGE people, instead of listening, he always has something smart to say, and he forgot that he was just like some of the people he is making fun of, it took for his mom to be on her death bed to turn his life around, and he is always implying that someone is gay, Im starting to wonder about HIM) I enjoy Judge Mayblean(Divorce Court) I also like Judge Hatchett but she is cocky and has a terrible temper, however she never gives up on the children.
Judge Judy is just a dried up crab!.
That sums up what I think about Maury and other talk shows.

He had to sell his boat for financial reasons. He fly fishes for bass and trout mostly, but uses bait casting gear for bass also.
…and I already have a float tube in mind, I need a set waders now. I have a few questions regarding waders.
1. Who makes the best set of waders?
2. Who makes the shittiest set of waders?
3. What are good brands of waders?
4. What's a good price for good waders?
5. What kind of accessories are available for waders? Bags? Vests? Backpacks?
6. Do they puncture easy?
7. Are they comfortable?
8. Will they keep you warm when its cold and cool when its hot?
rather than answer each question individually, l'll just sum it up for you.
l fish from tubes. a lot.
for me, the very best waders to use are none at all. just shorts. but at times they become necessary.
many socal lakes do not allow body contact so waders become a necessity.
l have used neoprene, canvas, cheap vinyl and have finally settled on a good set of breathable ones from hodgman.
vinyl gets hot in the summer. tears easily, best to avoid completely.
canvas is heavy. and can get uncomfortable.
started with neoprene. nice and comfy in winter. they get hot, hot, hot in the summer. and they are NOT made for sitting in a float tube. the seam in the crotch of mine was the first to go. you slip around in the seat of your tube. the butt area wears next. the material flexes fine when walking. in a tube the seams do not. you can roll the top down while wading in a stream. you can't do this in a tube.
my point:
breathable no stretch fabric waders are definitely the way to go. they retain enough body heat in the winter to keep you comfortable. in the summer, you don't wind up sitting in a puddle of sweat. all the others are very bad about this. they are light, fold up into a small package and store easily. you can put them on or take them off easily. not so with neoprene.
but, whichever type you decide on, get stocking foot waders, wear beach wading slippers, divers booties or a cheap pair of light tennis shoes so you don't damage the foot with your flipper strap. the flippers will stay on better with some sort of shoe, anyway.
hodgman is a decent brand. most of the others should be fine. prepare to spend $150.00 and more.
there should be enough gear storage space in the pockets of your tube.
vinyl would puncture the easiest. canvas being the toughest. there shouldn't be too much worry of punctures while in the tube. they all come with repair kits.
